Don’t Let Covid-19 Stop Your Seasonal Color Change
As the weather warms up, most commercial properties begin their seasonal color changes. There’s nothing like a pop of spring color to make your property look fresh and new for visitors and clients!
Although COVID-19 may limit how many people are on your property these days, it’s still important to maintain your landscaping – and that includes seasonal color. We’ve had a few clients ask us if it’s okay to delay seasonal color. While it may seem like a simple way to save on your landscaping costs during budget restrictions, skipping or delaying seasonal color can actually cost you much more in the long run.

Now is the Optimal Planting Time
While Texas has many beautiful wildflowers, most of the flowering plants used in landscaping are not native to this region. Therefore, we have to find the right window of time to help them acclimate so they’ll survive the Texas summer heat. While you can technically plant a flower anytime, the best window of time is April 15 – June 15.
How Texas Heat Affects Seasonal Color
The bottom line is this: Texas summers are brutal, and flowers simply cannot acclimate to the extreme temperatures if they’re planted too late.
Plants need to recover at night, but in order to do that they need temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s. It’s important to get growth and bloom during the cool spring evenings so plants are well rooted and healthy. Once our region hits triple digits in the day, the higher evening temperatures make it hard for plants to do any recovery work. More mature plants – those that ahve had a couple months to acclimate and grow – will be hardier and have a larger shade canopy over their root system, making them more resilient during the hottest part of the summer.
