EarthWorks Transforms the Keller City Police Department Courtyard into a Tranquil Space

The Keller City Police Department serves Keller, Texas, located in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Keller is a fast-growing community with big-city conveniences and small-town roots. The Keller City Police Department aims to improve the quality of life in Keller with value-driven and community-focused policing. They take on various duties, including traffic safety and regulation, uniformed patrol, community services, education, crime control, and animal services.

The department takes pride in their community and workplace, so they decided to upgrade the outdoor courtyard. The centrally located space was bare and unsightly from the department entryway and office windows. The department wanted to create a beautiful and inviting area for their employees and increase the visual quality of their department.

The Keller Police Department entrusted EarthWorks with revamping their courtyard into an appealing space that would be sustainable year-round. The department coordinated daily access to the area, provided plans for the blank canvas and remained involved throughout the process.

The project called for removing old materials, grading, edging, planting, and filling in walkways. Old materials such as mondo grass, metal edging, and dead plants were removed so EarthWorks could ensure the drain system functioned correctly. Once the prep work was completed, cobblestone was installed around the courtyard to reduce water from hitting the windows and leaving water spots. The cobblestone was also installed around two existing drain basins to reduce debris from ending the drain lines.

When it came to plants, EarthWorks used a mixture of ornamental grasses, seasonal color, and shrubs, all with different growth rates. The plants were arranged in a tiered system to create a practical design where they can be seen and enjoyed at full maturity. EarthWorks made calculated material and plant selections to achieve a beautiful, low-maintenance courtyard year-round.

The project was completed on time and on budget. EarthWorks received praise and encouragement from the police department throughout the process. Account Manager, Tyler Perry, said, “Several department administrators gave the crew thumbs-up through the windows while we were completing the project. It is always a refreshing feeling to see happy employees, especially when a project is in a very visible area.”
