Sunken Dog Park Project Spotlight

Recently, Camden Vanderbilt contracted EarthWorks to install a dog park. However, right from the onset, there needed to be more time to select an ideal location for the proposed feature. With an issue-laden fountain area that brought a host of problems every time there was a heavy downpour, our Camden clients knew they could do better. To tackle the fountain dilemma while making their vision a reality, we suggested converting the fountain into a sunken dog park!

We started off with an elaborate plan that took into account our client’s needs and respect for the existing natural elements. The project’s main goal was to create a relaxing and functional outdoor living space where dogs can run off energy, play, and socialize while emphasizing the beauty of the community.

EarthWorks team’s first day of the project started with pumping the water out of the fountain to get the level low enough to enter the area and allow it to begin drying out. This presented the most challenge, considering the area would fill with water anytime it rained. To remedy the problem, we had to partially pump the water back out again every time. Subsequently, we developed creative drainage solutions culminating in a highly functional underground drainage system.

To beat the site access challenge, we installed some steps and a concrete ramp down into the area. We then installed and leveled the base material and added perimeter fencing surrounding the dog park area. Further, for optimal, intuitive use and to make the space more inviting, we put up in-built concrete seating meaning residents can comfortably sit and watch their pets while socializing with other pet parents. 

Lastly, we incorporated a green design in the flooring plan using decomposed granite base and artificial turf. Other additional elements included an irrigated turf for easy maintenance and installation of pots with artificial plants.

Despite the challenges, the finished results turned out exquisitely, providing a highly effective sunken dog park that our clients absolutely loved. This was definitely one of the most challenging and rewarding projects we have had the honor to deliver.
