Give Back This Holiday Season By Volunteering at United Gospel Mission
A Message From EarthWorks President, Chris Lee
As we near the end of the year and enter the holiday season, I must reflect that I’ve been very blessed and fortunate to have the life and career I’ve had. Hard work has a lot to do with success, but there’s also an element of luck and blessings that comes from a greater power. I believe this can help us accomplish our goals, and the best way we can give back is to help those among us who are most in need.
I’ve always felt compelled to give back to my community at Earthworks. Today I’d like to tell you about an organization that has made a big difference to our community for many years.
United Gospel Mission of Tarrant County has been helping the people of Tarrant County since 1888, providing shelter, hope, and respect for those who don’t have a home. Their goal to end homelessness is carried out with tremendous compassion and dedication. They offer programs to individuals to develop skills that will allow them to function as independent and productive people.
The Men’s Program focuses on support services for mental health, substance abuse, and education. In addition to skill building, they also develop self-confidence and self-sufficiency by teaching communication and relationship skills required for stable employment.
The Women’s Program helps women in crisis by helping them find a new path in life that will provide healing and self-empowerment. Classes on domestic violence, budgeting, and computer skills combine social services with the creation of new economic opportunities, so these women can begin to take on personal responsibility and create new goal-directed behavior.
The Family Program is designed for single and intact families with children. The emphasis is on keeping families together in a safe and supportive environment. Parents are empowered by developing skills for maintaining a strong, healthy foundation for their families. This includes classes for cooking healthy meals, budgeting, early childhood reading, and participation in social adjustment or grief and loss groups.
When life gives us good fortune, it’s important to be grateful for what we have and find a way to pay it forward. For several years, we have provided free landscaping services to organizations like Union Gospel Mission as a small token of our appreciation for everything they do to help those in need in our community.
This holiday season, I encourage you to donate some of your time and give back to our community. United Gospel Mission offers many volunteer opportunities, such as help with kitchen services, tutoring, and administrative assistance. They also accept monetary donations, so you can still help even if you don’t have time available.
