The Impact of Homelessness on Families’ Well-Being
Homelessness in Dallas has been a persistent problem for many years. According to the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance’s 2022 Point-in-Time count, there are approximately 4,410 homeless individuals in the Dallas and Collin Counties on a given night. Of that number, 822 were persons in families. The experiences leading up to homelessness and homelessness itself can be particularly devastating for children.
For the most part, single mothers with multiple children under the age of five lead these families. Many parents in this situation will usually be confronting serious personal challenges such as the sudden loss of a home or the struggles of adjusting to shelter life. Given the extraordinarily stressful nature of their daily lives, these families are highly vulnerable to untold suffering that makes traumatization a distinct possibility.
On a broader scale, the experience of homelessness results in increased vulnerability to;
- Childhood abuse and neglect
- Developmental delays
- Academic underachievement
- Physical and sexual assault
- Witnessing violence
- Chronic stress
- Abrupt separation/isolation
- Feelings of helplessness
Vogel Alcove: Leading the Cause in Fighting the Long-lasting Traumatic Effects of Homelessness in Dallas
As a community, we can’t afford to overlook the lasting traumatic effects of homelessness and how significantly it affects the victim’s physical, cognitive, psychological, and social development. For over 35 years, Vogel Alcove has been helping the homeless achieve sustainable independence through multi-faceted developmental interventions that target the whole family unit.
Vogel Alcove uses a two-generational approach to solving family homelessness. By creating a safe, caring, and supportive environment, the center has positively impacted the lives of over 17,000 children. Additionally, they empower homeless parents to establish a stable home environment, heal from trauma and become self-sufficient. Without a doubt, the two-generational approach serves as a key strategy for improving the outcomes of these vulnerable families over the long term.
