In the heart of EarthWorks’ success story lies a dedicated individual who has been shaping landscapes and careers for over a decade. Meet Paul Carmella, the seasoned General Manager of the Garland Office, whose journey with EarthWorks spans an impressive 11 years as of this spring.

Paul loves the dynamic nature of his role, relishing the flexibility that allows him to immerse himself in every facet of the daily operations. Beyond the managerial responsibilities, he finds great joy in mentoring the team’s younger members watching their professional growth firsthand.

Roots and Family Ties

Originally from Pennsylvania, Paul is one of seven siblings—three brothers and three sisters. His family has expanded with a daughter and a delightful four-year-old granddaughter, both sources of great joy. Currently living in Garland, Texas, with his girlfriend Susan, Paul moved to the Lone Star State in 1992, marking the start of his career journey in Austin.

Cultivating Expertise

Paul has a solid educational foundation, holding a degree in Horticulture from Penn State University. His expertise is further demonstrated by his certification as an Arborist, showcasing a keen understanding of tree care. With an impressive 30 years of practical experience, Paul is a valuable asset to the EarthWorks team, bringing knowledge and a genuine passion for landscaping.

Beyond the Greenery: Paul’s Passions

Outside of landscaping, Paul enjoys trout fishing and the serenity of the great outdoors. In his free time, he channels his passion for cars and motorcycles. He is currently working on restoring two classic motocross bikes. A regular participant in car shows throughout the year, Paul has had the honor of serving notable clients, including figures like Michael Dell (Dell Computers), Martie McGuire (Dixie Chicks), Carmen Policy (GM of the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers), Dwight Clark (WR for the Cleveland Browns & 49ers), and Butch Davis (coach of the Cleveland Browns).

Favorite Foliage: The Threadleaf Japanese Maple

Paul’s fondness for nature is evident in his favorite tree—the Threadleaf Japanese Maple. Reflecting on his college days, he recalls a notable specimen near the main lecture hall. It is the largest he has ever seen, leaving a lasting impression on his appreciation for trees.

Closing Thoughts: A Journey Well-Tended

In Paul, EarthWorks has a leader who not only nurtures landscapes but also fosters the growth of those within the team. His commitment, passion for the outdoors, and keen eye for design contribute significantly to the success and beauty EarthWorks brings to landscapes everywhere.
